Recall Lab Memory Tests | Remember numbers, cell positions and light-up order
These memory tests show you something for a moment and ask you to give it back. Digit Span uses numbers, Grid Flash uses the positions of lit cells, and Order Trace uses the order cells light up. Each correct answer makes the question longer, and each mode keeps its own record.
💡 About This Tool
Every mode gives you 3 lives. A wrong answer costs a life and the next question stays the same length. Your score is the longest question you answered completely. Clear 7 digits and miss 8 digits three times, and your score is 7 digits.
| Mode | Length | Visible for (Normal) |
|---|---|---|
| Digit Span | 3 to 30 digits | 0.6 s + 0.4 s per digit |
| Grid Flash | 3 to 40 cells | 1 s + 0.08 s per cell |
| Order Trace | 2 to 60 steps | 0.5 s lit + 0.2 s gap per step |
You lose a life when any digit you submit is wrong in Digit Span, when you press two unlit cells in one round of Grid Flash, and when you press one cell out of order in Order Trace.
The Grid Flash board grows with the number of cells: 3×3 for 3 to 4 cells, 4×4 for 5 to 7, 5×5 for 8 to 11, 6×6 for 12 to 16 and 7×7 from 17 on. Order Trace stays on 3×3 and adds one step to the end of the same sequence.
Slow gives 1.5 times the display time and Fast gives 0.7 times. Scoring doesn't change, so compare bests at the same speed.
This is a game, not a medical test. Results change with how you feel, how much you've practiced and the size of your screen.
🧐 FAQ
Q: Can I use a keyboard? A: Yes. In Digit Span, type digits, press Backspace to delete one and Enter to submit. In the cell modes, move with the arrow keys and choose with Enter or Space.
Q: What happens if I switch tabs? A: The game stops while a question is showing or the next one is on its way. The same happens if you scroll the question off the screen. When you resume, the current question plays again from the start. There's no time limit for answering, so the game doesn't stop while you answer.
Q: What if I close the page in the middle of a game? A: Next time, Continue returns you to the same length and lives. The question itself is new.
Q: Can the same digit appear twice in a row? A: Not in Digit Span. In Order Trace, the same cell never lights up twice in a row either.
Q: Can I delete my records? A: Press "Delete all records" twice. That removes your bests and recent results.
📚 Fun Facts
In 1956 the psychologist George A. Miller published "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two". He argued that people handle about seven items at a time, and that what counts as one item depends on how you group things. He called those groups chunks. Later researchers, among them Nelson Cowan in 2001, argued that the real limit in chunks is closer to four.
That gives you something to try in Digit Span. Instead of holding nine single digits, hold three groups of three. In Order Trace, try seeing the path as a shape rather than a list of cells.
